while heading to what looked to be a certain win.
between earlier heat-race winners Justin Barcia, on the
GEICO Honda, and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson. The two went at it until Barcia managed
to break free around the halfway mark and held on to win
by three seconds.
The race for third looked like it was going to come down
to GEICO’s Blake Wharton and DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing Yamaha’s Ryan Sipes, but with two laps to go, Sipes
tried to pass Wharton in a turn and ended up taking both
riders out, giving Blake Baggett, Wilson’s teammate, the
third and final podium spot. Sipes ended up fourth with
Wharton sixth.

MY OWN RACE:
7 JAMES STEWART 15TH SX
James Stewart had worked his way up to 12th when he tangled with Jason Thomas on the sixth lap. “You look at it from
our side: I went to triple and he almost endoed over that
thing and rolled the next tabletop,” said Stewart. “So he like
completely shut it down and I just landed on top of him, but
if you look at it from his side: I’m the idiot. I came around the
corner, he dorked out, rolled the tabletop - what can you
say?
“After I got up from that, my front brake was stuck. I’d jump
the jumps and the thing wouldn’t turn, so that’s why I couldn’t
move forward again. The bike was bent up and the front end
kept locking up. Every time I’d jump it would twist up on me.”
James said the bike got beat up a bit after the first crash,
too. “It was bent up pretty good, but it wasn’t going to stop
me. I saw Villopoto and thought I could just catch him and
at least save some points, but unfortunately I got caught up
with Thomas and that was the end of that.”
17 JUSTIN BARCIA 1ST SX LITES
Justin Barcia said he enjoyed his battle with Dean Wilson. “It
was pretty intense,” he said. “We bumped a couple of times,
but I thought it was a pretty clean race. It was a tight race and
I enjoyed it a lot. I got pushed to the inside at the start, but
I came out in second behind Dean. We were bumping and
grinding the whole race, but I finally got a clean pass around
him to get the lead for good.
“This track - wow- what a tight track. It was tight and really
slick but I rode the wheels off that GEICO Honda. I can’t
explain my feelings - I’m so ecstatic.
15 DEAN WILSON 2ND SX LITES
Dean Wilson admitted getting arm pump in
the main. “I’m just glad to salvage second,
because I haven’t had as much time on the
bike as I would like,” said Wilson who had
been recovering from an injury. “I got out
front early and Barcia was right behind me
and we went back and forth a bit. There
were a couple of corners where he was
faster than me, but then there was a section where I was fastest, so it kind of evened out. The track was really tight, so I’m
glad I got a good start, but I just couldn’t hang on, I had the
worst arm pump, because I’m not quite in shape yet. It was
really hard to pass out there.”
57 BLAKE BAGGETT 3RD SX LITES
Blake Baggett’s first race on the
Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki went well. He came from
behind to finish third. “I got a horrible start, but I was on the outside,
because I didn’t have the best qualifying after getting ninth out of my
heat,” he said. “I just put my head down and worked hard,
and that’s what I got - third. I saw there was a pile up ahead of
me, and it was Sipes and Wharton. That helped out, but that
was just kind of how the track was, you didn’t know what was
going to happen. I proved I can run with the fastest guys. I
was catching those guys even though I was in traffic. I had
a bit of front brake problems, but we will figure that out and
come back in two weeks and get the win.”
