In the meantime, JGR/Toyota/
Yamaha’s James Stewart contin-
ues to struggle, finishing outside
the top five for the second race
in a row. Winning at this level and
with a field as deep as we have
in 2012, it’s all about starts and
Stewart simply hasn’t been get-
ting them. He’s got the speed,
evidenced by his fast qualifying
times, but you can’t let a guy
like Ryan Dungey, or any one
of five or six of these guys, get
away and expect to catch them.
There were reports that Stewart
was under the weather, which
certainly didn’t help his cause,
and he missed the second
practice session for that very
reason. The bottom line is the
last two races have gone to the
guy who nailed the holeshot
and this time it was Dungey.
Perhaps the best thing that
happened to Dungey all night
was that he got a bad start in
his heat race (see sidebar), and
because of that the team made
changes for the main. When
the gate dropped for the final
20 laps, Dungey rocketed into
the lead and was two or three
